Top Ten Favourite Australian YA Books

Today's Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by The Broke and the Bookish) topic is a freebie!  And since today is Australia Day, I thought, why not stick with the theme?  So today I am telling you my top 10 favourite YA books written by Australian authors.  (Also, if I've made a mistake and any of these aren't by an Australian author, please let me live on in blissful ignorance).

1.  Illuminae by Amy Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (review)
I'm almost certain you'll have heard of this book by now, but in case you haven't, it takes place in space and a bunch of awesome stuff happens.  And it doesn't just appeal to sci-fi fans because there's a whole lot of other dimensions to it.  Read it if you haven't!

2.  The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (review *with spoilers*)
Another book that I'm sure you know!  The Book Thief is a wonderful novel set within World War II and follows a young book-loving girl from the perspective of Death.

3, 4 & 5.  Every Breath, Every Word and Every Move by Ellie Marney (review)
This is an amazing series!  It's a retelling of Sherlock Holmes and so you can expect mystery and action if you decide to pick this up (which I hope you will!).

6.  Does My Head Look Big In This? by Randa Abdel-Fattah
I read this book quite a few years ago - when I was in early high school, actually - but I remember really enjoying it.  It follows a young Muslim girl and her decision to start wearing a hijab.

7.  Letters From The Inside by John Marsden
This is another book I read in high school.  You may recognise the author because he also wrote the Tomorrow When The War Began series (one I have not read).  This book is a series of letters between two girls - only one of them is in prison.  I do remember being super annoyed at the ending, but it made it all the more interesting.

8.  Cloudwish by Fiona Wood
Cloudwish follows a girl living in Melbourne and her adventures with her crush.

9 & 10.  Sweet Damage and Cooper Bartholomew is Dead by Rebecca James (review and review)
These books are both mysterious and heartbreaking.  I especially loved Sweet Damage.

When I was coming up with this list, I realised that I had read only a very small amount of Australian YA.  I barely even made up ten books in this list.  So, if anyone has recommendations, I would be very glad to hear them!

Have you read any Australian YA?  Be sure to link me to your TTTs in the comments!

  2. YAY! Great choice of topic this week. I always love freebie week as people always do such amazing topics! I didn't even know that half of these were Australian. I am desperate to read the Every Breath series, I have heard AMAZING things. I LOVED Illuminae, it was amazing and I had no idea they were Australian.

Here's my TTT post if you want to check it out. I picked non-book romances I would love to see get book adaptations.

    1. Haha it's not dumb! I hardly ever know what nationality the author's I read are (I always tend to assume they're American by default).
Thanks Jumana! It's always interesting to see what topics people choose on freebie day :)
Of course I would love to check it out :)
