Liebster Award - Discover New Blogs

I was fortunate enough over the last few days to be nominated by Erin @ The Hardcover Lover, Katie @ Kittens and Books and Kelly @ Bibliophile Bliss.  I am thrilled to have been nominated by these wonderful bloggers, so, a massive thank you to them! :)

The award is given to new bloggers by other new bloggers, and the rules are:

1. Link and thank the blogger who nominated you
2. Answer the 11 questions your nominator gives you
3. Tag 11 other bloggers who have less than 200 followers
4. Ask the bloggers you nominated 11 questions, and let them know that you nominated them

So... here are my answers to the questions!

Erin's Questions

1.  Why did you decide to start blogging?

After becoming obsessed with BookTube (the book community on YouTube, in case you were unaware), I started thinking a lot more about what I was reading and wanted to communicate my thoughts on books that I read.  I ended up deciding that BookTube wasn't for me - at least not yet - but I'd discovered the book blogging community by this time and figured that a book blog would be great for my purposes.

2.  Are there any books set in your hometown? If so, what one(s)?

Well, I don't know about my specific hometown, but there are a couple books set in Melbourne that interest me.
There's Does My Head Look Big in This? by Randa Abdel-Fattah which I read several years ago and remember liking quite a bit.
Another book set in Melbourne is Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley, which I have seen around a lot, but have not yet read.
A pretty limited list, I know!

3.  Who are some of your auto-buy authors?

This is a tough one because I honestly don't have any.  The only case where I automatically buy books is if I have loved the first in a series and the sequel is coming out.  I suppose the exception to this is Cassandra Clare, but that's only because the books she is writing are all set in the same universe, so they're semi-sequels, kind of? :P

4.  What is your favourite series?

Ahhhh this is another hard question.  I'm going to just default to the Harry Potter books.

5.  Do you like fantasy or dystopia better? Why?

I'm going to have to go with fantasy, because every fantasy book has the potential to be so different.  Yes, dystopian books can be different too, but I often find that they're ultimately about trying to overthrow the government.  Whilst I love dystopia, I get bored of it if I read too much from the genre.

6.  Have you ever written a book?

The simple answer is no :P

7.  What are some of your favourite book blogs?

Honestly, I have so many.  Lately I've been loving Notebook Sisters and The Loony Teen Writer, just to name a couple.

8.  What is your favourite book you had to read for school?

I enjoyed To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Does My Head Look Big in This? by Randa Abdel-Fattah (previously mentioned), Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose and Parvana by Deborah Ellis (otherwise known as The Breadwinner).

9.  What are you currently reading?

Three books.  Which is very unusual for me.  I started Seraphina by Rachel Hartman  and The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski but then Opposition by Jennifer L. Armentrout arrived from the library and I have been - perhaps not so patiently - waiting for it for so long that I immediately picked it up.

10.  Are there any books that you just know you won't read even though everyone tells you that they are great?

I don't think I'm going to finish the Septimus Heap books by Angie Sage in the near future.  I also feel that the Blue Bloods books are a big commitment to make so I'm putting it off.

11.  What is your favourite thing about the book blog community? Why?

I love seeing everyone being so friendly to each other and it's cool when I realise that a blog I like likes another blog that I like.  It's nice seeing everyone interact.

Katie's Questions

1.  What are your favourite and least favourite genres?

Well I'm not sure that YA counts as a specific enough genre, but it's my favourite ;)
Least favourite is probably realistic fiction.

2.  Is there anything you want to see more of in books?

It's not that they don't exist, but I want to read more books set in Australia!

3.  Are there any books that everyone seemed to love, but you didn't?

Vampire Academy.  Don't tell anyone.

4.  Do you tend to read more ebooks, or physical copies?

Definitely physical copies.  It's pretty rare for me to read an ebook.

5.  What is the last book you read?

The last book I finished was The Giver by Lois Lowry

6.  If you could make everyone in the world read one book, which book would you choose?

Not keeping in mind that everyone has different tastes, I'm going to say The Princess and The Captain by Anne-Laure Bondoux (translated by Anthea Bell).

7.  What book has had the biggest impact on you?

Probably The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness.  I didn't love this book, but it had a huge impression on me.

8.  What was your favourite book as a child?

I was a big fan of the Trixie Belden books and anything by Enid Blyton.  The Mermaid Secret by Vicki Blum was also a book I constantly reread.

9.  Have your genre preferences changed over time? How?

I'm not sure.  I think I've always been pretty open to trying any kind of genre.  I suppose I've always preferred books that deal with something unusual though, whether it be spies and secret agents or mermaids and fairies.

10.  Which book is so good that you could read it over and over again?

Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones for sure.

11.  Why do you blog about books?

Simply, because it's fun to talk about books.

Kelly's Questions

1.  Where do you buy your books?

Mostly from The Book Depository, because they always have what I want since it's online.  Occasionally I pick one up from Dymocks or Kmart/Target if I see something there that I've been looking for and it's at a good price (this is a very rare thing in Australia).

2.  What are you currently reading?

Answered above ^^ :)

3.  Last book you did not finish and why?

I think it was The DUFF by Kody Keplinger.  As mentioned before, I'm not the biggest fan of realistic fiction and I think that had a lot to do with this, but I could also see where the story was going and I didn't find it cute or funny which is what I was expecting.

4.  If you could meet anyone in the world (it can be fictional), who would you meet and why?

Wow.  I have no idea.  There's so many options.  Do I go with someone legendary?  A favourite musician?  A favourite lead character?  A fictional crush?  An author?  That's it, I can't pick.

5.  Favorite book to movie adaptation.

The Harry Potter movies, even though they weren't perfect, they got the vibe of the books right.

6.  Most anticipated book for 2014.

The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin.  I HAVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG!

7.  Love triangles. Hate or love them and why.

It depends how they're done!  I loved the love triangle in The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare (even though it caused me a fair bit of pain) and I didn't mind the one in the Trylle books by Amanda Hocking.  I hated the love triangle in The Selection because I felt like it had no need to exist.  It really depends on the book and the characters.
8.  Who is your favourite book boyfriend and why?

Will Herondale from The Infernal Devices tops the very, very long list.  This is possibly due to his wit and charm or what I am going to call "The Snape Effect".  If you've read all the Harry Potter books and The Infernal Devices books, I hope you will understand.

9.  If you were stranded on an island, what would be the three things you would choose to have with you?

Assuming a form of escape is not allowed, I would bring some form of e-reader...with an endless battery and unlimited credit.  I would also bring sunscreen and... a knife to help me make a shelter and for protection.

10.  3 random facts about you.

- I hiccup a lot.  Everyday, I have at least one bout of hiccups.  But generally they're not a lot of hiccups at once?  Just one or two?  It's strange.

- I have arachnoid cysts in my brain.  Which are basically bubbles of brain-fluid (ew).  They were found when I was about 5, and they stop me from hearing high-pitched sounds in my left ear.

- I get easily addicted to television shows, no matter what kind.

11.  Lastly, which book is next on your TBR pile?

Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
