Soundtrack Saturday - Penryn and the End of Days

It's been a little while since I've participated in Soundtrack Saturday, created by Erin @ The Hardcover Lover.  I've been running low on song options to be honest - I felt like I was picking the same artists every week.  Okay, I have been picking the same artists every week.  I was also worried that my choices weren't justified enough.  But I've decided that I don't really care about that anymore and so this week I'm sharing a soundtrack that I've put together for the Penryn and the End of Days trilogy by Susan Ee - otherwise known as the Angelfall books.  Which I love.  Also the last book came out and I've read it but I promise there will be no spoilers in this soundtrack because I'm not going to explain my choices.  Also, as usual, some of these are a bit of a stretch, however I've tried to put the songs in some kind of an order!

Soundtrack Saturday - Gone Girl

Soundtrack Saturday is a weekly meme created by Erin at The Hardcover Lover.  The idea is to pick a book and match up songs to it.  You can either do a mini-soundtrack (which has guiding questions) or a full soundtrack.  Now, I've usually gone with the mini-soundtrack option, but today I'm trying out the full soundtrack option!  And my chosen book is Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.  I've also decided not to explain my choices this week, because I think that if you've read the book (and know the lyrics) you'll understand.  So, I guess if you haven't read the book you could consider some of my song choices to be SPOILERS, so watch out if you haven't read or seen the movie.  Oh, and as usual, I'm basing my picks on my general interpretation of the lyrics rather than sound.  I wouldn't put these songs in a movie, they just remind me of events and characters.

1.  Black Cat - Mayday Parade

2.  Lying - Amy Meredith

3.  Blank Space - Taylor Swift

4.  Heartless - A Day To Remember

5.  Lights Out - Breaking Benjamin

6.  The Storm - Of Mice and Men

7.  A Shot Across the Bow - Mayday Parade

8.  Red in Tooth and Claw - Memphis May Fire

9.  Black Widow - Iggy Azalea ft. Rita Ora

10.  Loverboy - You Me At Six

11.  Ugly Heart - G. R. L.

12.  End of Me - A Day To Remember

So there's my soundtrack for this week - be sure to link yours below!

Soundtrack Saturday - Dangerous Boys

Today I have another Soundtrack Saturday post for you.  This book meme was created by Erin at The Hardcover Lover, in case you didn't know, and the aim is to pick a book you've read and pick songs that fit it.  There's more information here.

This Saturday, I'm picking songs to fit Dangerous Boys by Abigail Haas.  This was the last book I read in 2014, and I enjoyed it even more than Dangerous Girls (I seem to be in the minority here).  If you haven't read Dangerous Boys yet, I 1) highly recommend that you do and 2) suggest that you don't read this post as there are many, many spoilers.

* The links are to lyrics, rather than the actual song. *

A Song That Fits The Beginning
For this I've picked All Signs Point To Lauderdale by A Day To Remember.  I think it matches Chloe's feelings at the very beginning of the novel - "I hate this town" and "I just can't be tied down" being some of them.  I also think there's a few lines that fit with how she feels towards her mother at the beginning such as "now I never know the things to say to you".

A Song That Fits A Character
I've chosen No Different by Tonight Alive for this category.  The whole chorus - "I was looking for something to drown out the pain.  But with all the wrong answers it started again.  I learned on that very day, I just cannot keep running away from myself.  Under a spell dragged myself to hell."-  seems to fit with Chloe's decisions such as pursuing the relationship with Ethan (poor, poor Ethan) just to forget about the rest of her life and problems, and how, in the end, Ethan became part of her problems.  Other decisions she made, like, oh I don't know, GOING ALONG WITH MURDER, fit with the "dragged myself to hell" part.

A Song That Fits A Relationship
Heavy In Your Arms by Florence and The Machine is the song I've picked for this.  I think it describes perfectly the way that Chloe feels about Ethan's love of her, only the perspective is wrong.  "My love's an iron ball, wrapped around your ankles" and "my love has concrete feet" describe how Chloe thinks he is holding her back.  "[S]he took me to the river, where [s]he slowly let me drown" and "Who is the betrayer?  Who's the killer in the crowd?" are also some pretty cool lyrics in relation to what happens at the lake house.

A runner-up song choice for this category was, strangely, Happily by One Direction.  I think it fits Chloe's relationship with Oliver pretty well, except for the part where it was anything but happy!  "It's four A.M. and I know that you're with him.  I wonder if he knows that I've touched your skin.  And if he feels my traces in your hair I'm sorry, love, but I don't really care" and "I know you wanna leave, so come on baby be with me" are totally things that Oliver would say though.

A Song That Fits The Ending
I picked Break Your Little Heart by All Time Low for this one.  The chorus seems to encompass the ending: "I'm gonna break your little heart, watch you take the fall, laughing all the way to the hospital.  'Cause there's nothing surgery can do when I break your little heart in two."
I think the fact that Chloe stabbed Ethan, and then didn't care when he found out (well, she cared if it meant she was going to be found out, which I guess didn't matter in the end anyway) counts as breaking his heart.  I could imagine her laughing about what she did too.  I also think it's funny how the song mentions surgery, as Ethan had to have the surgery for his stab wound, but it couldn't do anything to fix what had happened.
And finally, "I'm moving on but you're left behind" is Chloe's attitude to everyone when she decides to leave her town for good and...visit...her dad.  Yikes.

Thanks for reading my Soundtrack Saturday of this week!

Soundtrack Saturday - Cruel Beauty

Soundtrack Saturday is a book meme created by the lovely Erin over at The Hardcover Lover, where you pick songs that match a book you've read.  Today I'm matching songs to Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge.  There's spoilers if you don't want to know what this book is about, it's nothing that you wouldn't know if you have read the synopsis, this is just a warning in case you plan to read the book with no idea of what is going to happen.
* I've linked all the songs to their lyrics, not a clip of the song.

A Song That Fits the Beginning
For this, I've picked You Should've Killed Me When You Had the Chance by A Day to Remember due to lyrics such as "So I say goodbye to a town that has ears and eyes I can hear you whispering as I walk by," because at the beginning, Nyx is essentially leaving a town, and her family, who have been talking about her her entire life, and the plans for her future.
"The only thing that's going to bother me is that you'll all call yourselves my friends" fits with her family, as she doesn't believe that they truly care about her, and are only using her as a means to an end.
"I walked into your house this morning, I brought the gun from our end table" sort of fits as she is to live with Ignifex and kill him right under his nose.

(I realise this is a bit of a stretch and I'm taking the lyrics very literally and a little out of context).

A Song That Fits A Character
I chose Riot by Three Days Grace as a song that fits Nyx, the main character, as a lot of the emotions mentioned in this song are things that Nyx feels throughout the novel.  For example: "empty", "let down", "angry" and "walked on".

A Song That Fits A Relationship
I chose another Three Days Grace song for this category: I Hate Everything About You.  "I hate everything about you, why do I love you?" pretty much sums up the relationship between Nyx and Ignifex, from both their perspectives.

A Song That Fits the Ending
Beauty and the Beast (Tale as Old as Time) from the Beauty and the Beast soundtrack is the song I've picked for this because, 1) I couldn't pass up an opportunity to include a song from the soundtrack and 2) I think it actually fits pretty well with the ending.  The phrase "tale as old as time" itself has some pretty significant connections to the ending, I believe since (highlight for spoilers):[ all the little myths/stories from throughout the book seem to end up being true/relevant, even though they are tales that they've been telling for as long as they can remember].  "Barely even friends, then somebody bends, unexpectedly" fits well with the relationship side and ["Finding you can change, learning you were wrong" fits with the main characters at the end too].  And I don't think I could find a better phrase to sum up the overall ending of this book than "bittersweet and strange".

So that's my Soundtrack Saturday for today!  Thanks for reading!

Soundtrack Saturday - Shadow and Bone

Soundtrack Saturday is a meme created by the lovely Erin, over at The Hardcover Lover.  The idea is to pick some songs that relate to the book in a few different ways.  This week I'm picking songs for Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo.  Some of my choices are a little loosely related (I read the book quite a while ago now), but I hope you'll see the connection.
*This post also contains spoilers (sorry), so if you haven't yet read Shadow and Bone, I wouldn't recommend reading this.

Soundtrack Saturday - Seraphina

Soundtrack Saturday oops today is Sunday is an awesome feature created by Erin @The Hardcover Lover, where you make a soundtrack for any chosen book.  This week I'm picking Seraphina by Rachel Hartman.  Unfortunately this week the songs I've picked are pretty spoiler-y, so if you haven't read Seraphina yet, you really should, and also don't read this post.  If you have read the book, here are the four songs that I picked!

Soundtrack Saturday - Divergent

Soundtrack Saturday is a new meme/feature created by Erin over at The Hardcover Lover, where you choose a soundtrack for a book that you've read.  There's 4 guiding questions/statements, which I'm going to answer now for Divergent by Veronica Roth.  Just a warning, there may be slight spoilers in this post, but nothing that should ruin the book for you if by some chance you haven't read it yet :)

A Song I Think Goes Well with the Beginning of the Book:
I'll Make a Man Out of You from the Mulan soundtrack.  I suppose this isn't really for the immediate beginning of Divergent, but I think it fits with all the Dauntless training and Four's (rather than Eric's) perspective on the Transfers.

A Song I Think Fits a Character in the Book:
Titanium by David Guetta featuring Sia.  I think this song represents Tris because no matter what is thrown at her, she never crumbles under the pressure.  She keeps going and pushes forward.

A Song I Think Represents a Relationship in the Book:
Borrow My Heart by Taylor Henderson.  This song seems to fit Fourtris well.  "Love is a feeling that you fear", "I won't let you go, when your world's in the dark" and "for you, I'll be brave" - please tell me you see the connections!

A Song I Think Fits the End of the Book:
Alone Together by Fall Out Boy.  I think the lyrics of this song captures the end of Divergent where (highlight to read)Four and Tris (and Co.) are leaving on the train, with no plans to go back.  Although they're heading to Amity HQ, they're not quite sure where they're going to go from there.

I had a bunch of fun writing this post!  I hope you liked it!  Link me to your own Soundtrack Saturdays :)
